At BK Patterson, we’re proud to be a family-owned business with two generations of builders leading the way. Brent and Kristina Patterson started the company over 35 years ago with a tight-knit crew of three. Today, we’ve grown, but the heart of our business remains the same—and some of those original team members are still with us, building alongside the next generation.
Nic Patterson, Brent and Kristina’s son, took the reins in 2018, continuing the family legacy. Starting as an apprentice in 2004, Nic worked his way up, gaining hands-on experience and a deep understanding of the trade. Under his leadership, BK Patterson has grown beyond residential builds, expanding into earthworks and commercial fit-outs while staying true to the values that built the business.
Today, our team operates from our Lower Hutt yard which is complete with a joinery workshop, storage area for materials, office, and meeting space to discuss your project. When you visit our yard, you may also get a glimpse of our full fleet of machinery and vehicles.

From building new homes, commercial fit-outs, renovations, and alterations through to earthworks and landscaping – we do projects of all sizes. We work across the Wellington region, including the Hutt Valley, Kapiti and Wairarapa.

We have a fantastic team of more than 30 experienced and qualified construction professionals – including a project manager, in-house joiner, tradesmen, apprentices, hammer hand and subcontractors. Keeping our team running like a well-oiled machine is our administration staff. They take care of the behind-the-scenes so that we can focus on your project.
As the Director of BK Patterson Builders, Nic assumes many roles within the company, demonstrating a diverse skill set in creating business for the company and overseeing residential and commercial building projects from conception to completion. With 18 years of experience in construction and a qualification as a builder, Nic’s expertise and meticulous attention to detail significantly contribute to project success and client satisfaction.
Engaging closely with clients from development design to obtaining building and resource consent, Nic ensures seamless translation of their vision into actionable plans. His responsibilities also extend to contractor procurement, pricing, and site management, showcasing his instrumental role in coordinating project elements and contributing to BK Patterson’s continued success.
Brent, the founder and director of BK Patterson Builders since its establishment in 1989, initiated the company with a small crew of three builders, some of whom remain with the company to date. Leveraging his extensive practical experience and profound knowledge in the construction industry, Brent is a key resource for both our staff and clients. Currently, he holds a pivotal position at BK Patterson, managing a continually expanding fleet, overseeing maintenance operations, and leading the Earthworks division of BK Patterson. Brent remains actively engaged, readily contributing his insights and hands-on support whenever necessary.
As the Project Manager at BK Patterson, Steve leads the oversight and coordination of the commercial aspects and interior fit-out projects as well as the smaller residential contracts. His responsibilities encompass pricing, planning, organisation, and execution, ensuring the successful completion of projects. Steve collaborates closely with clients to comprehend project requirements, working in tandem with the internal team, including engineers, architects, and subcontractors. Together, they develop comprehensive project plans, establish timelines, allocate resources, and define milestones. Steve’s hands-on approach includes daily site visits, underscoring his commitment to ensuring the safety, efficiency, and quality of the company’s projects.
Zoe is a highly experienced Operations Manager and a key driver behind the success of BK Patterson Builders. With a solid background in HR and real estate, she brings over nine years of experience in the construction industry. Her leadership is defined by a focus on building a collaborative, results-driven work culture. Zoe excels at streamlining operations, identifying opportunities for improvement, and implementing strategic solutions to boost productivity. She is also deeply committed to fostering a positive organisational culture, with a strong emphasis on supporting and developing our people.
Maureen handles accounts invoicing with great efficiency, making sure everything is assigned correctly and processed on time. She keeps our processes, procedures, and documentation up to date, ensuring they match our evolving branding standards. Beyond her core responsibilities, Maureen is always ready to step in and assist with additional tasks, offering valuable support to both the office and on-site team.
